The Side-Yard House is a response to current conditions in Indonesia, where the typical approach to housing—by contractors, developers, and homeowners—prioritizes maximizing the built-up area. This overemphasis often comes at the expense of natural lighting, continuous air circulation, and the soil’s ability to absorb rainwater. Developers and homeowners tend to focus so heavily on land utilization that the concept of a “side yard” has virtually disappeared from the vocabulary of modern housing.
